The Hula Stool was the outcome of a project to produce a piece of children’s furniture using only a single sheet of 15mm ply, to be exhibited and auctioned in support of the Children’s Hope Foundation charity. In an approach developed through model making, the stool’s compound curvilinear form is based on a series of rings cut on a computer-controlled milling machine, stacked together and separated with spacers. As with the earlier Loop Table, the stool’s central void gives the object physical and visual lightness.
The Hula Stool was subsequently scaled up and produced in an adult version by Cappellini, using teak, with skilled craftsmanship required to achieve the delicate joining details. This transition elevated the original plywood prototype into an altogether more complex and visually engaging object, which functions as both stool and, when inverted, as a small table.
Le tabouret Hula est l’aboutissement d’un projet visant à produire un meuble pour enfants à partir d’une seule feuille de contreplaqué de 15 mm, destiné à être exposé et vendu aux enchères au profit de la fondation Children’s Hope. Dans une approche développée par le biais du modélisme, la forme curviligne composée du tabouret est basée sur une série d’anneaux découpés sur une fraiseuse commandée par ordinateur, empilés et séparés par des entretoises. Comme pour la Loop Table, le vide central du tabouret confère à l’objet une légèreté physique et visuelle.
Le tabouret Hula a ensuite été mis à l’échelle et produit par Cappellini dans une version pour adultes, en teck, avec un savoir-faire artisanal pour réaliser les détails d’assemblage délicats. Cette transition a transformé le prototype original en contreplaqué en un objet beaucoup plus

The partnership between Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby has its origins among the school desks. While enrolled at the Royal College of Art in London, they founded the celebrated London-based studio that bears their name, and began collaborating with important names in the field and for international brands, such as Authentics, Coca Cola, Levi’s and Venini.Pioneers of a multidisciplinary approach, their work encompasses industrial, furniture and lighting design, and special installations; they create limited-edition pieces and commissioned public works.Together, Barber and Osgerby created two tables that are included in the Cappellini collection: the Loop writing desk and the Mini Bottle table; both are an expression of their unique positioning between design, art and architecture.Many of the signature projects by the two designers are part of the permanent collections of the world’s top museums, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
