Angela Mangiarotti
Angelo Mangiarotti was born in 1921 in Milan. After graduating in architecture from the Milan Polytechnic, he went to the United States in 1953 where he met architects and designers Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe and Konrad Wachsmann, among others, who inspired him and strongly influenced his work. On his return from the United States, he opened an architectural practice with Bruno Morassutti until 1960 and then became artistic director of Colle Cristalleria from 1986 to 1992. In parallel to his work in architecture and design, Mangiarotti is actively involved as a professor in Chicago, Venice and Florence and participates in numerous seminars and conferences throughout the world. Among the designer’s pieces presented at this sale, we find one of his most emblematic models: the Eros table. Created in the 1970s, the conical leg is embedded in a marble top and the whole is held together by the force of gravity alone. The Italian architect and industrial designer, known for his masterful approach to materials as well as for his numerous collaborations with the biggest names in the field, such as Cassina or Poltronova Snaidero, imagines creations that are still relevant today.
Angelo Mangiarotti est né en 1921 à Milan. Après avoir reçu son diplôme d’architecture de l’école polytechnique de Milan, il se rend aux Etats-Unis en 1953 où il y rencontre notamment les architectes et designers Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe ou encore Konrad Wachsmann qui l’inspireront et influenceront fortement son travail. A son retour des Etats-Unis, il ouvre avec Bruno Morassutti un cabinet d’architecture jusqu’en 1960 et devient ensuite directeur artistique de Colle Cristalleria de 1986 à 1992. En parallèle de ses travaux d’architecture et de design, Mangiarotti s’engage activement en tant que professeur à Chicago, Venise ou encore Florence et participe à de nombreux séminaires et conférences à travers le monde. Parmis les pièces du designer présentées lors de cette vente, nous retrouvons un de ses modèle les plus emblématiques : la table Eros. Créée dans les années 1970, le pied conique est encastré dans un plateau en marbre et l’ensemble se maintient par la seule force de la gravité. L’architecte et designer industriel italien, connu pour son approche maîtrisée des matériaux ainsi que pour ses nombreuses collaborations avec les plus grands noms du milieu, tels que Cassina ou Poltronova Snaidero, imagine des créations qui restent encore aujourd’hui pertinentes.
